Ethical Festive Shopping

Christmas is all about overindulgence. And, I happily participate: I eat too much, I drink too much, I disco dance too much, I waste days talking with my brother about sentimental classic Christmas movies, and rather than shop, I watch hours and hours of festive TV commercials. This year, none of them have floated by boat, except a commercial made by Iceland which was banned by the UK Advertising Standards Authority for being too political .  Too political, are they mental?! Iceland should be applauded for raising awareness of the plight of orangutans, and we should, at every given moment, be educated and reminded of the consequences of our buying habits, and our behaviour.

This festive season, help people in need, spend time with your friends and family, and shop ethically.  Check out the commercial

Today, still wanted by the government they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, ….then maybe you can hire…….

To be loved: which film?

heart‘’Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion’s starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don’t see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often, it’s not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it’s always there – fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know, none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge – they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I’ve got a sneaky feeling you’ll find ….’’

LISTENING CHALLENGE: Breaking Bad: Chemistry Teacher Turns Drug Manufacturer

Breaking BadBreaking Bad is one of my all time favourite TV Crime Series. It was recommended to me by my Teckie Knight. And despite the fact that we are like chalk and cheese, he definitely knows my taste in TV. From the opening credits I was hooked on it!!!
The critics say:

  • ”Offbeat and brilliant
  • The best show on Television
  • One of the greatest dramas in TV history
  • Brutal and comedic at the same time”

I say, if you haven’t watched Breaking Bad yet, I’d suggest you take a week off work and learn some chemistry. I haven’t been this addicted to TV since the 1990’s when I was addicted to Twin Peaks. Why not watch the pilot episode?

Don’t fancy watching TV. Ok, how about listening to one of my favourite tracks from the show?  Click here for Negro Y Azul: The Ballad of Heisenberg (From “Breaking Bad” TV Series)” by Los Cuates de Sinaloa

LISTENING CHALLENGE: CSI – CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATORS

CSI”The body is cold, the case is hot and the crime scene is the key to the killing. Crime scene investigators are a team of forensic scientists who bring crimes back to life. In the city of Las Vegas, between the high rollers and the low lives, between the hidden clues and the varied motives, lies the trail to the truth. The evidence never lies”.

Why didn’t I study to be a CSI?  I’m really keen on solving problems,  I’ve always wanted to say: ”You’re under arrest, you low life scumbag” and as many of you know, I usually wear black clothes.  Seriously, I would make a perfect CSI.  I need to go and talk to the Guardia Civil about a part-time job!

British Culture: Dr Who

Dr WhoOne of my favourite British science-fiction TV programmes is Dr Who. Dr Who has been produced by the BBC since 1963.

Dr Who is a space traveler and the show was originally intended to appeal to a family audience, as an educational programme using time travel as a means to explore scientific ideas and famous moments in history. However, some of the evil characters, like the darleks and the cybermen had children running behind their sofa scared stiff.
So far there have been 12 different actors playing the role of Doctor Who, and although their personalities have changed over time there are some basic traits that remain the same. The Dr has a deep sense of moral justice and he values the human emotions of love, courage and bravery. In addition, Dr Who has one mission in life: SAVE PLANET EARTH AND KILL THE DARLEKS.
