Robert Woldinger answers: What keeps us happy and healthy as we go through life? If you think it’s fame and money, you’re not alone – but, according to psychiatrist Robert Waldinger, you’re mistaken. As the director of a 75-year-old study on adult development, Waldinger has unprecedented access to data on true happiness and satisfaction. In this talk, he shares three important lessons learned from the study as well as some practical, old-as-the-hills wisdom on how to build a fulfilling, long life.
To overindulge is a verb which means you do something to excess. To put it another way, to overindulge means that the thoroughly reasonable concept of ‘moderation’ has been deleted from your brain cells.
So, during this festive holiday I have overindulged in eating, drinking sleeping and consuming hangover cures. Thankfully, I think overindulgence tempered with common sense is a life-affirming thing.
Life is short, so we might as well do everything to excess while we can. I say: work hard, party hard, live large! Wouldn’t you agree?
To be on cloud 9 – Estar en la nube 9
Ok, the summer of 2014 wasn’t great for me: Spain and England were dumped out of the World Cup; my best friend moved out of Málaga and George Clooney got married. Yes, personally speaking, the summer of 2014 was a complete disaster.
However, I’m now feeling all ‘loved-up’ and joyful. Yep, I’m on cloud 9! Although, the cherry on the cake is that I have got one of these tickets. Carmina Burana is simply one of the best choral pieces you will ever hear, and even if you think classical music is as dull as dishwater, I am sure you would enjoy this. You can not help feeling amazed by the sheer brilliance of the human voice! In my book, choirs ‘rock the house’!
Put all your eggs in one basket! – Poner todos los huevos en una canasta
Yes, putting all your eggs in one basket is a recipe for disaster! So, don’t put all your eggs in one basket;why have one boyfriend when you can have two!
Joy is to be shared! Everyone leap up and down Janette is in 7th heaven, yes she’s on cloud 9, she’s over the moon!
Don’t you just love it when a plan works out? Don’t you feel like a kid in a toy shop when the unexpected sends you delirious with pleasure? Of course, the answer is YES.
So, what’s the story Janette?
No, I’ve not won the lottery. No I’ve not met Mr Right, or Mr Wrong or Mr In-Between. No, I’ve not been getting close and personal with the local drug-dealer, ( what a pity!) and no, I’ve not managed not to burn a pot or a pan this weekend. You can all feel safe in the knowledge that Janette still can’t cook; ( Seriously, how can frying an egg be a challenge!?)
But, I have got one of these. Yep, a ticket to see Molotov Jukebox live. I’m crazy with excitement! Not heard of Molotov Jukebox? OMG, check them out.
And, last Saturday my gym instructor surprised me with the best spinning class I have ever, EVER had, and it was all to classical music. I am still on my knees bowing to the brilliance of this woman.
Inma, you are the WOMAN! I feel inspired and challenged and I can’t wait to get my arse back on the saddle!
