Have you had your fingers burnt?

To have your fingers burnt is an expression that is usually connected to the loss of money.  For example, as a result of corruption, bribery and fraud a lot of people who bought properties in Spain had their fingers burnt.

The following quote is from a recent article on the BBC News website:

“Many foreigners continue to buy Spanish homes in haste, only to regret their purchase having had their fingers burnt, and their life savings squandered on a disastrous property deal.”
